Delivering Dreams

In the quiet, tree-lined streets of Piedmont, two young men embarked on their daily routes, each carrying a piece of the neighborhood’s heartbeat. Tom, the milk delivery boy, woke with the first light of dawn, his wagon laden with glass bottles filled with fresh, creamy milk. Across town, Jake, the newspaper delivery boy, folded the day’s headlines with careful precision, his satchel slung over his shoulder as he set out to deliver the world to his customers’ doorsteps.

Tom’s route was a symphony of clinking glass and the gentle whinny of his trusty horse, Beulah Mae. He greeted the neighborhood with a cheerful “Good morning!” his voice echoing through the early morning mist. Jake, on the other hand, moved with a quiet efficiency, the rustle of newsprint and the soft thud of his footsteps the only sounds accompanying him.

Their paths rarely crossed, but when they did, it was a moment of shared understanding, a nod of recognition between kindred spirits. Both were the first to see the neighborhood awake, the first to bear witness to the quiet beauty of a town still bathed in the soft light of dawn.

One crisp autumn morning, as the leaves crunched underfoot and the air held a hint of woodsmoke, Tom and Jake found themselves at the same intersection. Tom, his wagon temporarily stuck in a rut, was trying to coax Beulah Mae forward, while Jake, his delivery almost complete, offered a helping hand.

“Need some help?” Jake asked, his voice warm and friendly.

Tom grinned; his cheeks flushed from the cool air. “I think I’ve got it, but thanks. You’re Jake, right? The newspaper kid?”

Jake nodded, returning the smile. “And you’re Tom, the milkman. It’s nice to finally put a name to the face. I’ve seen you around, you know.”

Tom’s eyes sparkled with amusement. “Oh, really? And here I thought I was just a ghost in the morning mist.”

From that day forward, Tom and Jake made a point to meet, their chance encounters becoming a highlight of their days. They would share stories of their routes, the quirks of their mutual customers, and the simple joys of their work. Tom spoke of the satisfaction of seeing a family enjoy a fresh glass of milk, while Jake marveled at the power of a well-written headline to shape a day.

As the seasons changed, so did their friendship. What had started as casual chats evolved into something deeper, a connection that transcended the boundaries of their roles. They found themselves looking forward to their meetings, their hearts fluttering with anticipation and a growing affection.

One evening, as the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in hues of orange and pink, Tom and Jake found themselves sitting on the porch of an empty house, their legs dangling over the edge. The neighborhood was quiet, the only sound the distant barking of a dog and the soft rustling of leaves.

Tom turned to Jake, his voice barely above a whisper. “Jake, there’s something I need to tell you. I… I think I’m falling for you. Not just as a friend, but as something more.”

Jake’s heart raced, a mix of surprise and joy coursing through him. He reached out, his hand finding Tom’s, their fingers entwining in a silent promise. “Tom, I feel the same way. I’ve been trying to find the courage to tell you, to see if you felt it too.”

With their feelings laid bare, Tom and Jake embarked on a new journey, one filled with stolen kisses and secret meetings. They would sneak away from their routes, finding hidden nooks and crannies where they could be alone, their love blossoming like a flower in the spring.

Their days were filled with the simple joys of their work, but their nights belonged to each other, a time to explore the depths of their feelings and the promises of their future. They dreamed of a life together, of waking up side by side, of building a home filled with love and laughter.

But their love was not without its challenges. The neighborhood, while generally accepting, had its share of gossip and whispers. Some saw their relationship as an anomaly, a deviation from the norm. Tom and Jake faced judgment and criticism, their hearts tested by the weight of others’ opinions.

Yet, through it all, they remained steadfast, their love a beacon that guided them through the darkest of times. They found strength in each other, their bond unbreakable in the face of adversity. And as they weathered the storms, they grew closer, their love deepening with each passing day.

One particularly beautiful summer evening, as the sun set in a blaze of purple and crimson, Tom and Jake found themselves at their favorite spot, the porch of the empty house. The air was filled with the sweet scent of blooming flowers and the gentle hum of nature.

Tom turned to Jake, his eyes shining with a mix of nerves and excitement. He reached into his pocket, pulling out a small, velvet box. “Jake, from the moment I first saw you, I knew you were someone special. Our love has grown with each passing day, and I can’t imagine my life without you in it. Will you marry me?”

Jake’s eyes widened, tears of joy streaming down his face. “Tom, yes! A thousand times, yes!”

And so, Tom and Jake embarked on a new chapter of their lives, their love story becoming a legend in the quiet streets of Piedmont. They continued their deliveries, their daily routines a testament to the power of love and the beauty of a life well-lived.

As they grew older, their love only deepened, a wellspring of strength and comfort that sustained them through the joys and trials of life. And as they looked back on their journey, from the chance encounter at the intersection to the proposal on the porch, they knew that their love was a gift, a treasure to be cherished and celebrated.

For Tom and Jake, the milk delivery boy and the newspaper delivery boy, had found something far more precious than any headline or glass bottle of milk—they had found each other, and in doing so, had discovered the true meaning of home, of family, and of a love that would last a lifetime.

About Ol' Big Jim

Jim L. Wright is a storyteller with a lifetime of experiences as colorful as the characters he creates. Born and raised in Piedmont, Alabama, Jim’s connection to the land, history, and people of the region runs deep. His debut novel New Yesterdays is set in his hometown, where he grew up listening to stories of the past—stories that sparked his imagination and curiosity for history. Today, Jim lives in Leeds, Alabama, with his husband Zeek, a tour operator who shares his passion for adventure and discovery. Known affectionately as “Ol’ Big Jim,” he has had a diverse career that includes time as a storekeeper, an embalmer, a hospital orderly, and a medical coder. There are even whispers—unconfirmed, of course—that he once played piano in a house of ill repute. No matter the job, one thing has remained constant: Jim is a teller of tales. His stories—sometimes humorous, sometimes thought-provoking—are often inspired by his unique life experiences. Many of these tales can be found on his popular blog, Ol’ Big Jim, where he continues to share his musings with a loyal readership. Jim’s adventures have taken him far beyond Alabama. For seven years, he lived in Amman, Jordan, the world’s oldest continuously inhabited city. His time there, spent in smoky coffee shops, enjoying a hookah and a cup of tea while scribbling in his ever-present notebook, deeply influenced his worldview and his writing. When Jim isn’t writing, he’s thinking about writing. His stories, whether tall tales from his past or imaginative reimagining is of historical events should read from his past or imaginative reimaginings of historical events, reflect a life lived fully and authentically. With New Yesterdays, Jim brings readers a rich tapestry of history, fantasy, and human connection. Visit his blog at www.olbigjim.com to read more of his stories, or follow him on social media to keep up with his latest musings and projects, one of which is a series that follows Bonita McCauley, an amateur detective who gets into some very sticky situations. His book, New Yesterdays, can be found at Amazon US, Amazon UK, Smashwords, and Barnes and Noble.
